Neck and shoulder tension from desk work: simple ways to ease it

Hours at a laptop, on calls, or looking down at your phone add up. By evening your neck feels stiff and your shoulders sit somewhere near your ears. Here are everyday habits that help, and where a relaxation massage fits in.

Check your setup

Raise your screen so the top is around eye level; a few books under a laptop works. Keep your elbows close to your sides and your feet flat on the floor. Hold your phone higher instead of bending your neck down to it.

Move little and often

Every 30 to 45 minutes, stand up, roll your shoulders back a few times and gently turn your head side to side. Short, regular breaks help more than one long stretch at the end of the day.

Ease the end of the day

A warm shower on your neck and shoulders, an early night, and putting the phone away an hour before bed all help your body let go of the day.

Where massage fits

A relaxation massage won't fix your desk setup, but a calm hour of focused work on your neck, shoulders and upper back can help you unwind and feel looser. You can ask me to spend the whole hour there.

Relaxation massage isn't medical treatment. If you have pain that is sharp, keeps getting worse, comes with numbness or tingling, or follows an injury, see a doctor or physiotherapist.
